Anywhere Lamp

Greta von Nessen, 1951

Designed in 1951, Greta von Nessen’s Anywhere Lamp is one of the defining works of mid-century American lighting design. True to its name, the lamp was conceived for remarkable versatility: it can rest on a table, mount to a wall, or suspend from the ceiling. A rounded metal shade and bulb housing pivot within a curved tubular frame, allowing the light to be directed with ease while giving the lamp its unmistakable profile.

Elegant, practical, and inventive, the Anywhere Lamp reflects a moment when modern design entered everyday life, not as ornament, but as a new way of living with useful objects. Its strength lies in the clarity of the idea: one beautifully resolved form, adaptable to many settings.

The design was selected for the Museum of Modern Art’s Good Design exhibition in 1952 and later entered MoMA’s permanent collection. It has also been collected by major design institutions, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, LACMA, and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. In 2011, the U.S. Postal Service featured the Anywhere Lamp in its Pioneers of American Industrial Design stamp series, honoring von Nessen alongside Raymond Loewy, Henry Dreyfuss, Norman Bel Geddes, Donald Deskey, Russel Wright, and other designers who helped shape the look of modern America.

Reintroduced by Nessen Lighting, the Anywhere Lamp is made to order in aluminum and steel and offered in a wide range of colorways, bringing fresh expression to one of Greta von Nessen’s most celebrated designs.

About Greta von Nessen

Born in Malmö, Sweden, Greta von Nessen trained at the School for Industrial Arts in Stockholm before emigrating to the United States in the 1920s with her husband, the German-born industrial designer Walter von Nessen. Together they founded Nessen Studios in New York in 1927, building a company devoted to modern electric lighting.

After Walter’s death, Greta revived the studio in 1945 and continued its work with designs of her own. Her best-known creation, the Anywhere Lamp, brought the Nessen name into the history of American industrial design and remains the piece most closely associated with her legacy. Today, Nessen Lighting continues the studio’s commitment to enduring, design-driven lighting.
